Why teleprompter videos still look like you're reading

People blame their delivery. Usually the cause is geometry: the angle between the camera lens and the words your eyes are actually tracking. Here is how to work out your own, and how to shrink it.

You wrote a good script, you read it fluently, and the take still has that faint quality of someone reciting. The usual advice is to practise more, memorise chunks, be more animated. Sometimes that is right. More often the problem is not performance, it is an angle — and unlike your delivery, an angle is something you can calculate and then change.

The one number that matters

Your gaze deviation is the angle between the lens and whatever your eyes are actually tracking. It has two inputs:

  • d — how far the text sits from the lens.
  • D — how far your eyes sit from the phone.

And the angle is arctan(d / D). That is the whole model. It is worth running for your own setup, because the results are less forgiving than most people expect.

This is arithmetic rather than a study, and you can check every cell of it. Where exactly the perceptual threshold sits is a harder question and we are not going to pretend to a precise figure for it. What is not in doubt is that human beings are extremely good at judging whether they are being looked at — it is one of the things our visual system is most finely tuned for — and that the difference between ten degrees and two degrees is the difference between a visible glance down and something almost nobody consciously registers.

Why full-screen scripts are the default and also the problem

Most prompter apps fill the screen with text, because that is what a teleprompter looks like and because bigger text is easier to read. Both true. But filling the screen means the words you are reading are, on average, somewhere near the middle of it — and the front camera is at the very top. On a typical phone that is around seven centimetres of separation, which the table above turns into a double-digit angle at handheld distance.

The trade is real and worth stating honestly: a narrow reading band shows you fewer words at once. You get less warning of what is coming, and it takes a little practice. What you get back is your eye-line.

Laptops are worse, not better

A 14-inch laptop puts a full-screen script perhaps 12–15 cm below the webcam, and people typically sit 50–60 cm from it. That is 12–17 degrees — considerably worse than a phone. If you are recording to a laptop and wondering why you look like you are reading email during a call, that is why. Move the text window to the top of the screen and it improves immediately.

Four fixes, cheapest first

  1. Move the text as close to the lens as it will go. The biggest single lever, because d is the numerator. If your app can put the script in a band near the top rather than filling the screen, that alone can take you from ten degrees to two.
  2. Step back and frame wider. Free, and it works on the denominator. Doubling your distance roughly halves the angle. It is also why the standard advice to stand further from the camera actually works — not because it hides anything, but because it shrinks the geometry.
  3. Raise the phone to eye level. This does not change the gaze angle, but it fixes a different tell: shooting from below produces an upward-looking subject, which reads as uncertainty regardless of where your eyes are pointed.
  4. Use a beam splitter if you shoot a lot. The text is reflected onto glass directly in front of the lens, so the offset is effectively zero — the geometry is as good as it gets. It costs money, needs setting up, and needs mirror mode turned on. Worth it if this is your job, overkill if it is not.

The tells that are not geometric

Fixing the angle removes the largest cause. These are the ones left over, and they are about writing and delivery rather than distance:

  • Scroll speed that is not yours. A script moving slightly too fast produces a very specific kind of clipped, breathless delivery, because you are chasing it. Calibrate the speed to your own reading rate rather than accepting a default — and if you read in more than one language, calibrate each, since the same default is wrong in different ways for different writing systems.
  • Written-language sentence structure. Subordinate clauses and long parenthetical asides are readable and unspeakable. Read every line aloud while writing it; if you run out of breath, so will the take.
  • No pauses in the script. Continuous scroll invites continuous talking. Write the pauses in as line breaks so the prompter gives you the beat rather than you having to steal it.
  • A still head. Reading makes people freeze from the neck up. Deliberately move — gesture, shift your weight — and the same audio reads as conversation.

Check your own setup in one minute

Measure the distance from your front camera to the middle of where your script actually sits, in centimetres. Measure roughly how far your eyes are from the phone. Divide the first by the second, take the arctangent, and you have your number.

Under about 2 degrees and eye contact will look natural. Around 5 and attentive viewers will sense something. Approaching 10 and it reads as reading, no matter how well you deliver it.

The band sits under the lens on purpose
